A beautifully written glimpse into the life of a survivor who shows us that depression, addiction, substance abuse and divorce don’t have to make us casualties. The candid story of Shelly offers a view of the darker part of our lives that so many people struggle with alone. I was engaged in her story from the first chapter and connected with Shelly in a personal and meaningful way.

In her writing, Harrison shows us how difficult life as a young wife and mother can be, but she puts her feelings into words revealing a person that wants to be loved. Her engaging writing style reveals Shelly, a young woman who simply existed as a child of an addicted parent and her own early sexual activity. She paints a visual picture as she describes the tragedy of two serious accidents and divorce. Through the thoughts and feelings of Shelly the reader is allowed to travel with her as she begins her journey of inner awareness and moves towards a deeply satisfying and fulfilling life. We watch as she survives struggles and failures to “find who I was destined to be.”

This is a powerful story of survival and growth. Harrison’s story is filled with enormous ups and downs and shows us that the path to surviving can take may twists and turns. I highly recommend this book.
